ENGLISH COMPOSITION
The English Composition
Department provides two distinct course offerings:
English 1A
This is the standard
freshman composition course that is universally required at colleges
and universities throughout the United States. Its emphasis
is on preparing the student to write the traditional academic
essay that is demanded in most undergraduate and graduate majors:
a formal analytical, argumentative, or expository essay that
may vary in length from four to ten pages and usually includes
correctly documented library or electronic research. This class
meets for four hours per week and provides four units of transfer
credit. Since it does not provide basic training in grammar,
reading, sentence and/or paragraph writing, students who are
deficient in those skills should consult with the Preparatory
English Department for an appropriate placement.
