Journalism 1 Introduction to Mass Communication
A critical study of American mass media and a comparison with other mass communication systems throughout the world. Course surveys books, newspapers, magazines, television, radio, film, press services, and the support systems of advertising and public relations after reviewing communication theory.
ADVISORY: Eligibility for English 125 and 126 or English 153 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Journalism 2 Interpreting Current Events
Analysis and discussion of important world news events. Readings in newspapers and magazines focus on interpreting and evaluating information in light of journalistic objectivity, propaganda, government censorship and the influence of various groups on news gathering.

Guided reporting and writing of a varity of news stories. Includes the basics of news writing, methods and practices, interviewing, feature writing, legal and ethical principles..

Journalism 5 Newspaper Production
Practice in newspaper production. Evaluated writing, editing, photography, layout and design as a staff member of the college newspaper.
ADVISORY: For reporters and editors, Journalism 3; for photographers, demonstrated ability using 35mm camera; for artists, demonstrated ability recommended.

Practice in magazine production. Evaluate writing, editing, photography, layout, and design as a staff member of the college magazine.

Journalism 10 Introduction to Broadcast Journalism
A survey course in broadcast journalism. Economic, social, and legal controls on broadcasting within a framework of the historical development of radio and television. Course will include emphasis on the knowledge and skills needed for producing broadcast news, including writing, interviewing and anchoring a news segment..
PREREQUISITE: None.

Journalism 19 Work Experience (Cooperative), Occupational
Success on the job, including interpersonal, problem solving, and communication skills; office dynamics and adapting to change. Group interaction. Collaborative learning activities specific to journalism. Learning objectives established specific to journalism. Seventy-five hours of paid employment or 60 hours of volunteer employment per unit per semester. Maximum of 4 units per semester, 16 units total. May be repeated up to three times for not more than 16 units total.
COREQUISITE: Fall and Spring Semesters: Must be enrolled in a minimum of 7 units, including work experience. Summer Session: Must be enrolled in at least one other course. Supervised employment directly related to the student’s major. Offered under specific majors.
