Speech 1 Introduction to Public Speaking (3 units)
Speech 1 is the exploration of both the techniques and theories of Public Speaking. There is an emphasis on research, logical organization and composition of informative and persuasive speeches. Students develop and deliver speeches on a variety of topics. Learn the strategies that can make you an effective and successful public speaker.

Speech 2 Interpersonal Communication (3 units)
Speech 2 provides an introduction to the interaction processes of interpersonal communication. Emphasis on effective and appropriate uses of verbal and nonverbal messages in the initiation, development, maintenance and termination of interpersonal relationships. Students will study conflict management strategies, negotiation techniques and other communication issues that are relevant to both ones personal and professional relationships.

Speech 4 Persuasion (3 units)
Speech 4 is the study and practice of more advanced public speaking strategies and skills. Students will study persuasion from the perspective of both persuader and audience. There is an emphasis on the theories of influence, advocacy and reasoning. Study will include exploration of specific persuasive appeals and campaigns, as well as, political persuasion.

Speech 8 Group Communication (3 units)
Speech 8 is the introductory course in small group communication, problem solving and decision-making. It provides an opportunity to study both the theory and practice of small group interaction. Students will be assigned to work in classroom groups to fulfill assignments and participate in classroom activities. Students will study and practice the theories, behaviors and processes of group communication.

Speech 12 Fundamentals of Interpretation (3 units)

Speech 12 is an introductory course in the oral interpretation of works of literary art in their intellectual, emotional and aesthetic entirety. Class readings include poetry, prose and drama.

Speech 20 Community Involvement (1-3 units)
Speech 20 is a Service-Learning course that enables students to contribute to their community, pursue educational experiences outside the classroom and further their academic goals through service experiences in nonprofit agencies. There is an emphasis on the analysis, practice and application of communication theory, leadership and citizenship through a community service experience.

Speech 25 Argumentation (3 units)
Speech 25 is an introductory class in critical thinking. Coursework will include the study of reasoning, analysis, advocacy and criticism of ideas. Emphasis on derived conclusions based on valid evidence and sound inferences without fallacies of thought and language. Students will demonstrate critical thinking and analysis through a variety or oral presentations and written assignments.

Speech 26 Intercollegiate Forensics Laboratory (1-3 units)
Speech 26 is the college competitive debate and forensics team. The class provides tutorial work in public speaking and debate. In addition to the class hour each week on campus, students must either attend intercollegiate tournaments for a specific number of weekends or participate in on-campus intramural contests.
